About Cappadocia
Cappadocia is a region in central Turkey. It covers cities such as Göreme, Ürgüp, Avanos and Uçhisar. It is famous for its naturally formed fairy chimneys, underground cities, historical churches and museums. Fairy chimneys, the most famous feature of Cappadocia, were formed 60-80 million years ago as a result of volcanic activities. Fairy chimneys were formed as a result of wind and water erosion of volcanic ash and sand called tuff.
There are also underground cities in Cappadocia. These cities were used in ancient times to escape from enemy attacks. Some underground cities have 8-10 floors and were built to accommodate thousands of people.
The historical churches of Cappadocia are also very impressive. There are many churches in the region where people of Christian faith used to live. Most of these churches are carved into the rocks and decorated with frescoes.
